England versus India 5th Test: Day 2 Highlights
Score at stumps
India 1st innings: 224
England 1st innings: 247
India 2nd innings: 75/2
Day 2 of the England vs India 5th Test was marked by high drama. India mounted a memorable comeback after being bowled out for 224 in the morning session. India’s pacers Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna engineered a remarkable collapse of the English batting lineup.
India fold, England push ahead
India resumed at 204/6 but collapsed quickly, losing the last four wickets for just 20 runs, and being dismissed for 224. Gus Atkinson starred with 5/33. He triggered the tail’s collapse and announced his arrival on the Test cricket stage
England’s surge and fall
England began aggressively, with opener Zak Crawley (64) and Ben Duckett (43) carving out a 92-run opening stand in just 77 deliveries. ‘Bazzball’ was in full effect. It was the fastest 50-run start in terms of balls faced in the series. India, however, fought back sharply post-lunch. Siraj and Krishna combined to claim 4‑wicket hauls each, tearing through the middle order. Only Harry Brook resisted with a brisk 53. England collapsed from 129/1 to 247 all out.
Indian pace dominance
Siraj finished with figures of 4/86, reaching the milestone of 200 international wickets when he dismissed England captain Ollie Pope for 22 via an in‑swinger before lunch. Krishna delivered his career‑best Test figures, grabbing 4/62, turning the tide after England’s powerful start.
Jaiswal accelerates
Yashasvi Jaiswal took charge with an aggressive 51* off 49 balls, including seven fours and two sixes. His innings included two early drops by England, a costly oversight. India lost KL Rahul cheaply for 7 (caught behind off Josh Tongue), and Sai Sudharsan fell for 11 to Gus Atkinson, who claimed the final wicket of the day.
At stumps, India were 75/2, leading by 52 runs. Akash Deep went out to bat as a nightwatchman. He’s unbeaten on 4.
On‑field drama
A heated verbal exchange followed Krishna dismissing Crawley. A verbal sparring between him and Joe Root drew a direct warning from the umpires. Akash Deep faced criticism for a send‑off after dismissing Ben Duckett, an act branded “embarrassing” and unsportsmanlike by commentators and England’s camp. Tensions resurfaced late when Sudharsan and Duckett engaged in a heated exchange after Sudharsan’s dismissal, adding further edge to an already fraught day.
What to expect on day 3
The day also held emotional significance, as players and fans commemorated the late Graham Thorpe, underlining the match’s emotional as well as competitive intensity. It has been one of the most intensely-fought Test series in recent times. Day 3 promises to have more in store. Fatigued bodies and strained nerves are likely to dictate terms.
