CricDiary: England pace-bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton announced today that he will be taking an indefinite break from red-ball cricket. The 31-year-old, who made his Test debut in 2022, has played just two matches in the format. His most recent appearance was against India at The Oval during the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar series. Overton managed only two wickets and scored nine runs across two innings.

Overton began his first-class career with Surrey in 2012. He has since accumulated 2,410 runs at an average of 21.51 that includes one century and 13 fifties. He has claimed 239 wickets at an average of 31.66 in 99 games.

In a social media post, Overton said, “After a lot of thought, I’ve decided to take an indefinite break from red-ball cricket. I’m incredibly fortunate to have played 99 first-class games, including two Tests for England.

“First-class cricket has been the foundation of my career and the gateway to every opportunity I’ve had in the game. It taught me the game and fueled the ambitions that drove me for so long. However, with the year-round demands of the sport, I can no longer commit fully to all formats, both physically and mentally,” he said.

“From now on, my focus will be on white-ball cricket, and I’ll continue to give everything to compete at the highest level for as long as possible,” Overton added.
