Asia Cup 2025: Sri Lanka to Field Full-Strength Squad against Hong Kong
CricDiary: Ahead of Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup 2025 opener against Bangladesh, Charith Asalanka reminded the cricket fraternity that his side were the defending champions. Technically true, but in light of Sri Lanka’s patchy record in global tournaments since that triumph, the claim raised a few eyebrows.
For Asalanka, however, the psychological lift of that title still mattered. It showed against Bangladesh last night. Sri Lanka dominated the game many expected to be evenly matched but was not.
Consistency, however, has often been Sri Lanka’s biggest weakness. Their next game against Hong Kong tomorrow offers a chance to build momentum ahead of the crucial final group match against Afghanistan.

Hong Kong, already eliminated after two losses, will be eager to exit on a high. What better way than against the defending champions?
Sri Lanka, while improving, still have vulnerabilities in the middle order. Kamil Mishara has injected some intent but there’s still heavy dependence on openers Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka. Early wickets could tilt the game.
Sri Lanka is expected to field a full-strength squad against Hong Kong. Their commanding display against Bangladesh suggests they are hitting top form. The challenge, for Hong Kong, will be daunting.
