Levelling the Series Will Be Significant, Says Shubman Gill
CricDiary Desk: India captain Shubman Gill has said that levelling the five-match Test series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will be a big achievement for his side. India is trailing the series 1-2. The final Test begins at The Oval today.
“Very significant,” Gill said when asked at the pre-match Press conference about what it would mean for his team to level the series after losing the first Test at Leeds, bouncing back to win at Birmingham, almost pulling off a miracle at Lord’s, followed by a gritty draw at Manchester.
Gill believes his team’s resilience—particularly on demanding pitches and close finishes—puts them in good shape to force a 2–2 result. The Oval wicket is expected to favour seamers and that could work for India. All games went deep into the final day which is rare in a five-match series these days. The hot weather and slow wickets made the players toil hard as five tests were crammed in seven weeks. Key players of both sides have suffered injuries. England captain Ben Stokes has been ruled out of the finale with a serious shoulder injury.
Gill highlighted that the series has been a steep learning curve for him personally and for India. A young team that has had to reinvent itself after losing key players.
