England vs India: Fifth Test Preview

Fifth Test

CricDiary Desk: The England-India Test series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy heads to the last game at The Oval that begins on 31 July. With five Tests crammed into less than seven weeks, mental and physical fatigue is a major factor for both teams heading into the finale.

India managed a great escape of sorts in the fourth Test at Old Trafford. They can still level the series 2-2 by winning the fifth Test. Their dramatic effort to bat out 143 overs in the second innings, allowing Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar to reach personal milestones despite an offer from England skipper Ben Stokes to settle for a draw, has added an extra layer of tension to the upcoming clash. That aside, India coach Gautam Gambhir’s altercation with The Oval’s curator Lee Fortis, has frayed nerves on both sides.

Bumrah or not? India faces dilemma

The entire cricketing world knows of Jasprit Bumrah’s workload. India’s main bolwer, limited to three Tests in this series because of a nagging back injury, bowled 33 demanding overs on a slow Old Trafford surface. He claimed two wickets. Gambhir has confirmed that all his fast bowlers are fit, including Akash Deep, who impressed with a 10-wicket haul at Edgbaston before a groin issue sidelined him at Lord’s. His potential return offer India more options if they choose to rest Bumrah.

England weigh pace options too

England is also in a largely similar situation. Jofra Archer returned after four years of injuries and has already bowled nearly 90 overs in two Tests. He may be rested. Brydon Carse, who toiled on the unresponsive Manchester wicket, looked fatigued. England’s attack struggled for a breakthrough in India’s second innings. Jamie Overton has joined a pace-rich squad that includes Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson for the fifth Test.

Managing Stokes’ Workload Becomes Crucial

Stokes’ heroic all-round performance at Old Trafford—scoring a century and taking a fifer—was both a boost and a concern. He became only the fourth English player to achieve that feat in a single Test. Stokes’ physical toll, however, was evident. He bowled a career-high 140 overs in this series. He’s also the leading wicket-taker with 17 dismissals. Stokes has been central to England’s success. Visible signs of discomfort and injuries to his thigh and bicep have sparked concerns.

Gill nears historic milestone

India captain Shubman Gill has been a revelation in this series. His fourth century of the series, a patient and gritty 103 under pressure at Old Trafford, has largely cemented his leadership credentials. With 722 runs so far, Gill has already surpassed Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record for most runs by an Indian in a series against England. Gill is now within touching distance of surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s all-time India series record of 774 runs set against the West Indies in 1971.

The series is set for a dramatic conclusion with the fifth Test. England will look to seal the series and India is hoping to pull off a memorable comeback. A mouth-watering contest is on the cards.
